Dr. Kivitz

Dr. Kivitz is the founder of the Altoona Center for Clinical Research and the Altoona Osteoarthritis Center. He has been practicing in the Altoona area for more than 20 years. Dr. Kivitz is affiliated with the Altoona Regional Health System in Altoona and Health South Rehabilitation Hospital in Altoona.

Dr. Kivitz received his medical degree from Albany Medical College Albany, New York. He completed training in Internal Medicine at the North Shore University Hospital, Manhasset, New York and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, New York City, New York. He completed his fellowship training at the Albany Medical College, Albany, New York.

A Certified Clinical Investigator (DIA) and a Certified Physician Investigator (ACRP), Dr. Kivitz has been featured in more than 100 publications from JAMA to the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society. He has given many presentations and lectures all over the world—France, Germany, Portugal, and throughout the United States. Dr. Kivitz is a member of the American Medical Association, the Pennsylvania Medical Society, Fellow, American College of Rheumatology and a member of the International Society for Clinical Densitometry.

Clinical & Research Experience:

As a Clinical Rheumatologist, Dr. Murphy is actively engaged in all phases of clinical research resulting in numerous publications, lectures and research presentations at national and international scientific meetings.  As a principal investigator, Dr. Murphy has conducted more than one hundred clinical trials in various areas of interest including Rheumatoid Arthritis, Psoriatic Arthritis, Ankylosing spondylitis, Sjogren’s syndrome, Lupus, Osteoporosis, Osteoarthritis, Fibromyalgia, medical education & sarcoidosis. 

As a respected advocate for ongoing research in the field ofarthritis, Dr. Murphy has received national distinction as a Founder’s Circle member of the American College of Rheumatology, Research and Education Foundation.  As a clinical educator, Dr. Murphy continues to teach medicine and maintains an adjunct faculty appointment as a Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in Philadelphia, PA.

Education & Military Background:

Dr. Murphy attended Villanova University where he received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology and a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English.  As a Health Professions Scholarship Recipient, Dr. Murphy received his medical degree from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. He then completed a categorical internship and residency in Internal Medicine at Walter Reed Army Medical Center where upon graduation he received the distinguished Outstanding Medical Resident Award.  

Upon completion of residency training, Dr. Murphy underwent Rheumatology Fellowship training through an integrated Rheumatology Fellowship Program between Walter Reed Army Medical Center and The National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland.  As a member of the United States Army Medical Corps, Dr. Murphy served his Country in many distinct and diverse capacities culminating in his promotion to Chief of the Rheumatology Division at Brook Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas.

Dr. Lavelle

Dr. Lavelle received her medical degree from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. She completed her Internal Medicine residency at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and Fellowship Training in Rheumatology at Albany Medical Center, Albany, NY.

Dr. Sommer

Dr. Sommer received her medical degree from Albany Medical College Albany, New York. She completed training in Pediatrics at the North Shore University Hospital, Manhasset, New York and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, New York City, New York. Dr. Sommer was in private practice for many years prior to joining AAOC
